OK. "One of my closest homies was on America's Most Wanted."

(In my stankest voice) SO!!!!!!

First, let me say, I love this blog. I support you, Kim. I appreciate your voice in Hip Hop and we definitely need more like you.

Now on to the boss...

Now, I appreciate him for calling out my school (Florida State) in his latest single. But, I have some REAL issues with this guy.

His non-admission only enrages me more. I really wish he would just admit it. We know its NO "Rumor".

Stop trying to save face, Rick!

This is an example of everything wrong with mainstream Hip Hop. These so-called gangstas purport a message of a savage, hustler, drug- slinging lifestyle (a lifestyle that they do not live).

It's sad that rappers perpetuate backwards thinking by rapping about nonsense (drug dealing, pimping, etc.). Not to say that these social ills do not exist in our community and arent worth talking about or bringing attention to. But rappers are glorifying it. They are glorifying this counterproductive message to kids when they know better!

Thats what bothers me! Not the fact that rappers glorify it alone. But that they glorify it, profit from it and THESE RAPPERS (Im just gon stop calling them artists) KNOW BETTER!

Rick Ross knew better. As a high school senior, he did some cost/benefit analysis. When faced with the decision to become a correctional officer out of high school, he KNEW the benefits of having a legal, honorable profession.

And aint nothing wrong with that, Rick! Why is he denying that at one point in his life, he had a salary-paying job?

Who is he trying to impress? Or more importantly, who and where is this group of people who wont accept or support Rick Ross' music if he would admit to have once had a LEGAL job?

Is he afraid? What are the repercussions of having once been an upstanding citizen?

Let me know.

What other things must we deny if having a job isnt cool? Must we deny going to school, getting an education in order to be considered real or authentic?

What is real or authentic, anyway? Who sets the standards of a gangsta rapper?

But, he's only digging himself in a deeper hole by trying to legitamize his "gangsterism" by bigging up his friend who was "on America's Most Wanted".

When did associating with criminals become a prerequisite for rappers?

So, fraternizing with hard-core criminals validate your lyrical skills?

how silly. All questions, Rick.

But, this entire "scandal" is good for one thing. It's exposing a facet of our culture that supports retrogression, a facet I ,personally, am trying to eradicate.

Though it may be difficult for us academics to believe, there are some people in our American culture who think education or any opportunity to better yourself without compromising your morals and values is wack.

And Ross is certainly appealing to those people, those who choose to "keep it real".

But, Ross' actions are counterproductive in terms of how we should encourage a younger generation (and every generation!) to think.

And I know rappers aren't in the business of raising kids, David Banner, but you know better.

Rap what you know.

P.S.: I think its funny that Rick Ross was "attacked" singularly, but he uses the word "us" as if he's built an army.

Naw, its you!
